A review of the Subal ND70 housing for the Nikon D70.

Introduction

Arnold Stepanek made his first underwater camera housing in 1952 and still designs the entire Subal range today. The underwater photography grapevine informs me that the Subal ND70 was designed on Arnold's laptop while he was away on vacation earlier in the year. So how does his holiday work measure up?

First it seems fair that I lay my cards on the table. I am a confessed Subalophile

I have heard that Subal are making some D70 housings with twin synch sockets on the second run off this housing (although I think that they are all pre-sold orders). Plus they are making a special right hand handle that allows you to mount a second strobe on it. This is all UW photo gossip - but from a reliable source

I was so focused on the Shutter speed discussion that it slipped passed me that you were shooting with the new Subal housing as well. Looks like a wonderful housing and not much bigger than my Tetra 5050. Your review was very timely and well written. Didn't even know about the window for the control. I did spring for the eyepiece. And Ryan at Underwater Camera Pros is working on some strobe mounting ideas for me. I'll post some pics of the final result later. Rand
