Jason Schneider of Resource Magazine Online recently put the claims of G-Technology’s water resistant 1 TB G-Drive to the test … by submerging it in the ocean. Not only did he submerge the device in ocean water, but he also dragged it through the sand and banged it against some rocks. Because the device floats, this is theoretically the worst accident a traveling underwater photographer could have with a portable external hard drive. After all that, the data was still intact.

This is G-Technology’s description of the drive:

“The lightweight and portable 1TB G-DRIVE ev ATC with Thunderbolt from G-Technology is a rugged, bus powered, all-terrain drive solution with a tethered Thunderbolt cable that helps shield and protect a removable G-DRIVE ev RaW USB hard drive. The watertight enclosure will float, and if it happens to become submerged, the watertight compartment will protect the drive in up to 1.0’ / 0.3m of water for up to 30 seconds. The watertight compartment will also help to further protect your data from pressure, shock, and dust.”
